Earth Stewardship Ministry Team

For the beauty of the a good steward

Local Mission

What is an Earth Stewardship Ministry Team?

  • Our purpose is to offer prayerful attention to the environment in which we live and to help lead individual members and the church community as a whole to grow into more faithful earth stewards.

What are we doing now?

  • Every day we work to reduce the church’s carbon footprint.
  • Every week we collect old batteries to be recycled (Please place in the bin near the Church Office).
  • Every month on the first Sunday, we sponsor a Fair Trade Product Sale to promote fairness and economic justice for small farmers. Coffee, tea, nuts, and chocolate are available for sale during Coffee Hour in Fellowship Hall.

  • We have begun an exciting new partnership with other downtown faith communities who are also interested in helping the earth. Many of our members are now involved with ICE:
    • Dayton’s Interfaith Collaborative for the Environment. We have sponsored movies and meetings to help our congregations and Dayton citizens learn more about efforts the local faith community to improve the local environment. By joining with others of similar interest, we feel we will be able to be a stronger voice in the community and help each other learn more of the positive steps being taken by others to help make Dayton a healthier place to live and worship.

What else have we done?

  • Worked with WPC Staff to reinstitute recycling of paper, aluminum, plastic & tin at the church.
  • Worked with the E.J. Brown Elementary School to help inner city youth learn to garden.
  • Offered adult education series on environmental issues.
  • Gave away free tree seedlings on Earth Day Sunday.
  • Worked an organic vegetable garden plot at the Wegerzyn Community Gardens, the produce donated to the Dayton Food Bank.
  • Sponsored Alternate Transportation Sundays to help create environmental awareness, encouraging members to walk, bike, carpool, or use other energy-saving modes of getting to Sunday morning worship.

What can you do?

  • Join us as a team member, a supporter, a prayer partner, or someone who is called to help. The opportunities, challenges, and rewards are exciting and endless. The Earth Stewardship Ministry Team meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at Westminster. Please contact Lola Signom ( or Betty Hoevel ( for more information.

God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars. ~ Martin Luther (1483-1546)
